Earlier in the month I wanted to challenge myself to getting out for a walk everyday. Not just for the physical benefits, but for the mental as well. I wish I could say that I made it out every single day, but life happens and it just wasn’t possible. What I will say, however, is that I made it out most days and it has become something I look forward to doing most days.
There were two main reasons that I am wanting to get out and get walking. First is that I want to get back into running more seriously. Getting out and walking is a great way to get more time on my feet, and loosen up from any other runs/workouts I’ve been doing. The second, and more important reason is my mental health. I’ve recently been laid of from my job, and I’ve needed a positive form of stress-relief. Getting outside and walking has been super beneficial on days that I’ve been anxious about my situation. It gives me a chance to get out of the house and get myself into a positive mindset.
One thing I continually struggle to get better at, is to not beat myself up over the little things. The first day I missed a walk, I felt like a failure. But I was also very sick. I’m the mom of a toddler snot machine, so it’s inevitable at this time of year. I took a couple days off to rest, and then got right back at it. This mindset is something I hope I can translate to other facets of my life.
Ultimately what I have learned: Consistency is more important than perfection.
