It’s OK To Ask For Help

What’s something you believe everyone should know.

One thing I think everyone should know is that it’s OK to ask for for help. I am a very independent person and personally have a hard time asking for and accepting help. And I know that I’m not the only one.

A turning point for myself is when I became a mother. When my son was only 2 weeks old, my husband became very sick and had to keep away from us for a few days so we wouldn’t catch sick either. My mom offered to come out and help and immediately the dread of having someone in my messy house set it. I reluctantly said yes, and thank goodness she did.

When my mother came over she did laundry, cooked, cleaned, and held my son so I could take a nap. I never in my adult life had someone (even my own mother) help on that level. I don’t know why, but even though she did my laundry throughout my childhood it felt weird to have her do that for me as an adult.

After my initial hesitancy to accept the help, I began to truly appreciate it. It was nice to not spread myself too thin, as I often do. Those few days changed my perspective and have allowed me to ask for help when I need it. I’ve learned that my support system isn’t going to judge me, but be happy to help me thrive.

Does this mean I ask for help all the time? No. But if I’m really ever in a pinch, I am more likely to reach out to someone in my support system and ask for help.

I hope this reaches someone that is as stubborn and independent as myself. It is OK to ask for help. You may be surprised at how much it lifts the weight of life off your shoulders.
