Daily Prompt: Thankful

Daily writing prompt
Jot down the first thing that comes to your mind.

Sometimes good things come to those who wait.

The last six month have been tough. I made a tough decision about a year ago to leave the job I had for almost nine years to pursue a new career opportunity. As fate would have it, I was laid off six months later. It was an emotional blow. My family had relocated for that job and we had barely moved into our new home when we got the news. What I have learned in these past months is that when life gives you lemons, use them to make lemonade.

Don’t get me wrong, there has been plenty of tears, stress, and anxiety. But yesterday after months of networking, interviews, and lots of just waiting, I finally got an official job offer.

When I saw the daily prompt, the first thing that came to mind is that I’m THANKFUL. While things did not go according to plan, sometimes the universe works in mysterious ways.

Why I’m Thankful

  • The move brought me physically closer to family. Having a support system close, especially with a young child, has been so great. Not only have I been able to see my family more frequently, I’ve also been able to rekindle some friendships that have strayed apart over the years.
  • I’ve been able to spend quality time with my son, making memories that I wouldn’t have if I was working full time. My son is preschool age, and I was able to bump him down to part-time. Knowing my goal was to go back to a full-time job, I have filled our special days with adventures making memories everyday.
  • I’ve worked on self-care. I have always enjoyed running and being active outdoors. I am two weeks away from competing in a half marathon (it has been years). I also took the time to try new things. I have completed a few sprint triathlons over the years, but always struggled with the swim. I took swimming lessons over the winter, which is something I wouldn’t typically take the time for.
  • Along the lines of self-care, I started this blog. It has offered me a creative outlet to share my thoughts and ideas, which is exactly what I’ve needed over the last few months. I can’t wait to continue this project.
  • Lastly, I am moving on professionally to bigger and better things. I have found myself a job that will challenge me and help me grow as a professional. I’ve worked in cardiology for the last 10 years, and I look forward to being a part of some really cool technology and devices.

The last six months have been tough, but things are working out. I’m sharing this because maybe someone out there is experiencing a similar situation. Sometimes life can can throw you a curveball. Focus on the positive. Find outlets to channel your stress and frustration. Take a step back and make a list of all the things in life you are thankful for. The universe have a mysterious way to working things out.
